Low Limit at Califonia CasinosQ.I've played poker for years in low limit home games, and I especially enjoy 7 Card Stud. I decided to do some reading and try my skills out at the local casinos -- I'm within 20 minutes of several. In my reading I developed a rather rigid opening hand system, and am finding it to be not only boring, but rather unsuccessful. So far I've been a small loser. With all this background, my question is rather specific. I find the 1-2 and 2-4 stud games to be very loose with people staying in on anything! What is the best strategic response to this? A.In a loose game you should be a little more inclined to play weak three-flushes, small three-straights, gutshot 3-straights with overcards, and non-best pairs with a suited kicker. But if you have trouble folding these hands when they don't develop into a strong draw, or when too many of your cards are dead, then don't even play them in a loose game. For example you should not normally play something like (Jd 3d) 7d in a low-limit stud game if two of your diamonds are out, because it won't make money in the long run in a low/no-ante game. If you had a live ace or king instead of one of the low cards, then it's a better hand because you might back into a winning pair or two pair. But the low/no ante in these games mean that normally there's not enough money in the pot to pay for your draws with weak flush hands unless they also have straight potential. If the game is loose, however, and you can see 4th street cheap, then you should take off one more and see if you catch a diamond. But if a lot of diamonds come down in other hands, or if you catch anything other than a diamond, you should probably fold. If you pair the jack you can stay in one more round it there's a good possibility that nobody has a higher pair.
