Ruby And Diamond Earring.

Q.Does your girlfriend understand thats why you haven't asked her? In fact, does she want a diamond at all? (some women don't...they'd rather have something more unusual, like a cladaugh (sp?) ring)

A.also consider getting something other than a diamond -- i have an incredibly gorgeous ruby ring, very simple setting, and get a lot of compliments on it. i just don't think diamonds are all that great and since rubies are almost as hard (someone willing to post the hardness scale of stones?) i settled for something with more color. probably would have gotten her as big a diamond as I could afford, with maybe some small stones on the side (nothing too gaudy, but a little color - maybe a small ruby on each side). She, it turned out, didn't want a very large stone (phew!) and she wanted it set in white gold. As a result of buying it together, we ended up with a ring that we both think is beautiful. One other nice thing - we'd discussed how the whole engagement ring thing seemed rather sexist. It wasn't a big deal to either of us, but I thought it had overtones of "buying" the woman, or at least my marking her as "mine" when she wears "my" ring. So when we were at the jewelers buying the rock, she bought me a diamond earring (I have worn one for years, but never a diamond). It's just a small stud (no jokes here), but now I, too, have an engagement (ear)ring.
