Mother Of Pearl Jewelry Box.
Q.What is your favorite sentimental piece of jewelry and what is the story behind it? I have an inexpensive small gold heart pendant that says "mom" inside the heart. My son bought it for me when he was twelve. The other sentimental pieces are those that came from my mother, a cameo, her engagement and pinky rings, and two watches on chains.
A.I saw several posts on this group suggesting mother of pearl jewelry boxes. I strongly recommend you consider them as an alternative to more traditional gifts/favors. One word of advice though, make sure you buy quality boxes only, the glue used on the cheap ones will deteriorate over time and it will smell real bad. My most treasured items are the bone handled button hook that came from my maternal great grandmother. The other came from my paternal grandmother. If you have seen the etuis in the mother of pearl case on the front of Neryilla Taunton's (sp) book on needlework tools. Well I have the same thing only mine is fitted out to hold a ladies fob watch. About those Mother-of-Pearl decorated chests.....I've been looking at Asian shops just for samples of these......many jewelry boxes are good candidates for sewing chests.....some of these boxes are beautiful examples of inlaid m-o-p patterns and don't always look like jewelry boxes but perfect for needlework things. I have a large Egyptian m-o-p inlaid box, with a big tray inside the box lined with velvet I use for this very purpose.....
