Man Jewelry Catalog
Q.I was looking in a jewelry catalog and I saw some blue topaz pieces I really liked. They were all very inexpensive, too--the earrings are oval shaped in a sterling silver setting for only $19.00. A ring set in sterling is $15.00. Is authentic blue topaz this cheap? This sounds too good to be true. Is it?
A.Depends on the stone - size, cut and color. London Blue Topaz is one of my favorite stones. They range from inexpensive to reasonable. If you look on eBay you'll see quite a lot of blue topazes for sale. Check them out for pricing, it will give you an idea of what's a decent price for the quality of stone you want. You can buy ring (and pendant, earring and brooch) settings and loose stones and put them together and get exactly what you want. A jeweler can do it for a few dollars, or you can even buy "snap" settings in which you can set the stone yourself. Settings in sterling are inexpensive. There are a lot of very beautiful semi-precious stones and some of them are much easier to wear than the precious ones (many gems, like emeralds, are notoriously delicate). Sometimes the rings in catalogues are also inexpensive because the setting hides a flaw. As long as that doesn't bother you, go for it!
