Man Costume Jewelry
Q.In the comics section, the strip "Crankshaft" features a young couple shopping for furniture. It looks like a flashback to the late 1960's/early 1970's. There's a VW Beetle in the parking lot and a flower sticker on the rear windshield and rear window. The guy is wearing sideburns. "What do you think of this table, Jeff?" the young wife asks her husband. "It's nice but I don't know if we can really afford a table like this, Pam." "I know it's kind of expensive" she replies. "But if we buy something of good quality now, we'll have it..." And the last scene is a flash forward to TODAY. The middle-aged husband has his arms folded and he recites the word, "...forever" - obviously, he is reminding his wife of what she said when they first bought the table. "But look at all the nicks and scratches," she insists, obviously going back on the commitment that she made when they first bought this table. Can anyone doubt that scenes like this actually are repeated in real life on a regular basis?
A.The main character in that strip, Crankshaft, has a lot in common with some folks here. He is little inclined to put up with BS from anyone. Where some might find him a grouchy old man, I find him a refreshing change from some of the pap in other comic strips. There was another dig at communications problems in the Sunday comics-- Husband and wife are walking down the street and stop in front of a jewelry store where wifey admires necklace and earrings. Hubby says, "Let'g go in an look at them." Wifey says "Oh, we couldn't they're too expensive." As they walk away, Hubby is thinking "I wish she'd tell me what she wants". Wifey is dreaming of the jewelry. Since wifey has a job, perhaps she'll buy them with her own money!
