Jewelry Man Promise Ring
Q.Do you feel: * A ring that is NOT a diamond ring an engagement ring or a promise ring. (I don't know if it is popular everywhere but in my area a promise ring is a ring that is a type of pre-engagement ring, sort of a promise to stay with you type of ring) 1/ That a girl should know what her ring is going to be before she is even proposed to? 2/ That an engagement ring is really special if it is given by a man who has already been engaged twice? 3/ That it is proper for a lady to accept the question but deny the ring? If she approves of the ring but doesn't want it?
A.1/I think here it all depends on the couple. I have always loved surprises, and yet I've always known what kind of engagement ring I would love to have, and yet I've always wanted the man to choose what he likes, too. To get through all of this, I always thought it was a good idea to frequent jewelry stores together, look at rings together (not necessarily diamonds, either - I realized early on that I wanted something other than a diamond for my own engagement ring), perhaps try on rings to see what looks good on the hand, look realistically at prices, and get some ideas together. When the actual time of proposal comes, I think the guy should know the kind of ring his Lady would like and would be able to buy her one without her knowing and surprise her with something that would bring a huge smile to her face along with the fact that she knows how much she is loved by this man. 2/ This is tricky. If I were the Lady dating a guy who had already been engaged twice, I'd want to know the circumstances under which the first two engagements were terminated. I would want to know if he chose the wrong woman twice already (and would wonder if I was the right choice, too) or if he had done something wrong, etc. I think under those circumstances, I would date him longer before even discussing marriage. I would want to be sure that he was serious about marriage. I would not want to become a statistic. 3/ In my opinion that's tacky. This shows to me that there was not a lot of forethought by the man in choosing the ring and/or his Lady is a little too fussy. Some women need to be there when the ring is bought because of their nature. I am not saying this is right or wrong, just that it happens. Each man must know his Lady very well before considering marriage with her, and so I think he would know details about the ring and her feelings toward it. At least, I would hope so. This scenario is very sad. Seems to me the marriage would be very shaky.
