Selling diamond jewelry

Q.A friend of mine recently got some jewelry through an inheritance. Most of it is just sentimental value, but there is also a diamond engagement ring, with an appraisal also. What is the best way to sell the jewelry? Ebay auctions don't seem to be getting good prices and I'm not sure if pawn shops can be trusted.
