Cleaning Platinum and Diamond JewelryQ.Does anyone have any safe home remedies for cleaning platinum and diamond jewelry? I can never get my band to look as clean as the jeweler does. A.Found this online. The jewelry stores get that extra sparkle though from the stones because they have that shot-of-steam machine. I use an old soft toothbrush on my fine jewelry, except the peals. Carol Don't wear fine jewelry when doing housework or gardening. Don't heap your jewelry into one drawer. Remember a diamond ring can scratch that pearl necklace. Keep them separate and ideally wrapped in velvet, paper, or silk. Do check for loose stones frequently by gently tapping the piece with your finger near your ear. Do get pearls restrung every two years or annually with frequent use. Do clean fine jewelry often to maintain its sparkle and beauty. Do not use toothpaste as its abrasives can damage softer gems and metals. All fine jewelry can be safely cleaned by soaking for 10 minutes in warm soapy water (using a non-detergent soap). Use a soft brush on harder gems to loosen any dirt around the prongs. To reduce greasy build-up on diamond jewelry, dip it in plain alcohol or vodka before soaking. Target sells materials for cleaning jewelry. They are on the jewelry counter in red containers. I bought the ultra-sonic cleaning machine for $20 because it was recommened in a diamond book. Unfortunately it doesn't clean my ring as well as the steam cleaner does at the jewelry store. I've had more luck with the $3 tubes of cleaner that have the brush inside. They look like red mascara tubes and they are on the counter with the other jewelry cleaners. They are safe for diamonds and platinum.
