Q.Does anyone know who has been cast as Marie Antoinette? Count Fersen? Also, I am now aware that Alexandre Dumas wrote a popular fictionalized account of the necklace affair in "Le Collier de la Reine" in 1849-1850, known as "The Queen's Necklace" in English. This was the second in Dumas's five novel series on the period before and during the French Revolution. It is amazing to me how poorly marketed the "Affair of the Necklace". Promoting sales of this novel could have been help publicize the film.
A.The best account of the subject that I've ever read is in "The Fatal Friendship" by Stanley Loomis. The friendship in question is that of Marie Antoinette and Count Fersen, so the Necklace Affair is peripheral to the larger story. Loomis also wrote a splendid biography of Mme du Barry (much more interesting than I thought she'd be) and "Paris in the Terror," which is terrific history if a bit grim for those of us with royal affections. The Affair of the Necklace" (now on DVD and Video) based on the true story of Jeanne de St. Remy de Valois, known as the Comtesse de La Motte de Valois, a descendant of one of King Henri II natural sons. The film, which I finally saw recently, brings to life the scandal involving the diamond necklace scandal which tarnished Marie Antoinette's image in 1785. Hard to believe, but the "Grove of Venus" scene was based on an actual incident involving a fake Marie Antoinette convinced the foolish Cardinal de Rohan that he was now in her favor.
