CAD program for jewelry design?
Q.I'm a jewelry designer. I've been using CorelDraw for around 4 years to do fairly detailed 2D work, and am now looking to go 3D. I'm looking for a 3D CAD recommendation based on the following criteria: Precise rendering down to 0.1 - 0.01 mm. Texturing of surfaces in shiny metal. Transparent colored objects (ie colored stones). Ease of use (is this a contradiction?) Price, of course. I'm currently using a P2-266 with 64 meg RAM and 4MB video RAM. Should I upgrade?
A.I strongly suggest you take a look at PovRay The Persistence of Vision Raytracer. Going by your above mentioned criteria it will meet or exceed your demand for years to come. Price wise you can't go wrong either-- it's 100% FREE. I recently with the aid of others wrote a simple plug in for the program that generates photo realistic user definable diamond shapes plus if you decide to investigate the program further I know of many other programs that will produce many jewelry related shapes and textures with direct output to PovRay.
