Cubic Zirconia Silver Ring

Q.I'm just dabbling in jewelry-making as a hobby (again), and I'd like to try my hand at setting a small cubic zirconium in a nickle-silver ring. I've never done anything with "real" cut gemstones (just stuff that I've polished myself) so I don't even know the terminology involved. Where would I go about getting loose (un-set) cubic zirconia? How much might I expect to pay for a generic-shaped stone roughly the size of a 1/4-karat diamond?

A.Roughly $0.20 per stone. Keep in good mind that buying "real" cut gemstones can be very affordable. Peridot can be purchased for as low as $0.15 per Carat. And Garnets for as low as $0.25 per Carat. Of course, you often get what you pay for. But I do not use CZ anymore, since I have access to affordable "real" stones. Somewhere between 10 cents and 50 cents, depending on the color, size, and minimum order. They're normally sold by diameter, though sometimes there will be a description of 'equivalent diamond carat' weight. CS is much heaver for a given size than Diamond (greater specific gravity if you want to get picky). I suspect that by "real" you mean "valuable": such as rubies, sapphires, or emeralds. We usually divide stones in Man-Made and Naturals, which should be self-explanatory... and the Naturals are sometimes divided in Precious and Semi-Precious which are less so. To see if a stone is Precious it is often enough to look at the price tag: diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and sometimes opals and pearls belong to this group, all other stones are considered Semi-Precious. And having said that, let me complicate matters by asking you to not use the term Semi-Precious anylonger - it is outdated and discouraged. "Gemstones" cover them all. No problems. If you send me the latest issue of Jeweler's Circular Keystone, or Lapidary Journal, or Penthouse :-) I will send you a parcel of good round brilliant CZ. I got a bit crazy last year and bought half a pint of'em...
