Contemporary Man JewelryQ.Question: I read once about a practice reported among some "primitive" race whereby, when one clan bumped into another, the two chiefs would confront each other and promptly smash one of their own prized possessions. This was supposedly to show the other that "We have plenty of stuff and are much better off than you". I realise that this whole business might be the ravings of some European explorer, but I'm more interested in the concept as a sort of metaphor than sociological fact. The practice has a name, but that eludes me. Can anyone elaborate on this for me? A.No different than the Palins Indians of Germanics reciting their deeds of heroism, who they were related to, and what great men they were associated with. Virtually all "primitive" people you care to study - and contemporary man - have some way of boasting of, establishing and demonstrating status, whether it is in the size of the tipi, the number of cattle, the speed of the horse, the cut, style or decoration of the clothes, jewelry, etc. The potlatch is no different than a medieval baron sponsoring feasts or tourneys - a visible disposition of wealth to demonstrate that you were wealthy enough to be able to afford it. Normally it can be seen as part of an exchange system. On the family level, today, the equivalent is hosting a party, or inviting the boss for dinner. In one case you know that you will be invited to a reciprocal party, in the other you hope to have the investment returned through job benefits.-- Other Questions : Can you tell me about your idea with the poem"The Jewelry Box"?The Jewelry Box Curtains, blown by a vespertine gale, Applaud movements of the coryphée, That sentry for everything that's frail, As well as the things of beauty saved.
