Cheap High School Class Ring, Your opinions on Graduation Rings ?

Q.I am going to graduate in about a year and am wondering if I should buy a graduation ring. My tastes are simple and I am not planning to flash my graduation ring for all to see. I am considering a signet or a traditional ring with my year of graduation, school crest, and initials imprinted on the ring. These rings aren't cheap...the signet is around $400 and the traditional is close to $500. Is it irrational of me to want to buy a grad ring when it is so expensive? I guess I want to know if a grad ring is worth buying. Also, what finish do you think is best? We have 10K, 14K and 18K as well as siladium. There are also stone options...but they are all synthetic. I am thinking of getting the 18K but I am not sure yet. Lastly, if I were to buy a ring, which finger should it go on? I am thinking the middle finger of my right hand so my ring fingers on both hands (the second finger closest to the pinky finger) will be free for other rings.

A.I got a high school class ring, in silver, because that's what I wore at the time (well, silver colored.. it was silver and something else mixed, not sure what, but to make it stronger and cheaper, I imagine.- just over $100) It was lovely, but honestly, I knew I wouldn't wear it after the graduation ceremony. I wore it just about every day of my senior year, about half of my junior, but after the cermmony I took it off, and that was it. I always wore it on my right ring finger, but that was also when trading rings with a loved one meant something- then I wore his on my thumb and he put mine on his pinkie- because that's where they fit. I assume from the sig line that this is to be a college ring. I guess you should get it if you think you'll wear it, otherwise, why bother? I never really had to make this decision for college (in my 4th year now, graduating this spring), because a ring isn't really in the character of the school.. it would have been rather odd. (Think Yugo with leather interior and Bose audio- type odd.) You only graduate once, but really, will you wear it? I know some who do and some who don't. All really an individual thing. I always said I was a perfect example of and R-MWC graduate with my wedding rings on my left hand and my college ring on my right. Since our rings are clean and elegant (only two styles, the main one is a black onyx, the secondary is a smaller gold signet for women who had black onyx at their high schools) they are easily worn for years. If I had not gone to a small school (750 people total) where we all got the same ring and seeing that ring was an instant identifier, I would not have gotten one. IMO, anything that looks like a high school ring will quickly end up in a drawer never to return. Sentimentality will be strong for you right now, but unless you can convince yourself to get the signet ring, I think anything else will be a waste of money in the long run.
