Celtic tat designs
Q.Does anybody know of a good site out there where I can get some celtic designs? I'm looking for something to do with water, but can't seem to find anywhere that describes what the symbols mean. Also can anybody recommend a good tatto artist in the north-east of England?
A.just go to a search engine and enter Celtic Art....there are loads out there... I've just had an arm piece tattooed by Jon Nott, in Guildford (sorry, a bit far for you!); two intertwined birds (cranes?) in a celtic knotwork design......i got my inspiration from a hand printed card (and my friend has the t shirt!!) i had the design for 2 years till i found the right tattooist for the job...best of luck in your search...but if you're up to travel, i suggest Jon. e mail me if you want address, phone number etc. Having studied irish, anglo-saxon, and scottish manuscripts, metalwork, and stonework for the last 10 years, I can tell you pretty authoritatively that most of the symbols have no meaning. You can thank the New Age industry and the jewelry manufacturers for the idea that the various motifs have "meaning" to them. That said, the triskellion (three-armed spiral) is occasionally cited as being related Mananan (oh hell, that's spelled wrong) the irish god of the sea. Mananan sailed in his glass boat that rode just above the tips of the waves. But we can probably thank Victorian-era "scholarship" for that connection, as well.
