Carrick Celtic Jewelry.

Q.Here's hoping someone out on the 'Net can help -- Just got back from Ireland, where my wife did her best to shop her way from the Irish Sea to the Atlantic. She got a beautiful claddagh ring in Galway, and a Tara brooch in Carrick-on-Shannon. The brooch is circular, with a straight (?)dagger(?) running through the circle from the 2:00 position to the 8:00 position. Would anyone know the history of the Tara, or its symbolism (if any), or anything else that will explain to my mother-in-law what the damn thing is about? To me, it was just a beautiful piece of jewelry, but I now am hoping for more information

A.Want you need to carry and what the consumer wants to buy is something that all of the other Scottish gift-ware merchants don't carry, something individualistic and unique. I would suggest contacting an artists and craftsmens guild and see about getting together with some folks that could produce hand-made and unique items that still reflect Scottish culture and heritage, but are not the cookie-cutter mass-produced sort of goods that everyone else carries. These might be such things as hand made cromachs (shepherd's cruiks), sporrans and hand-made leathercraft items (how about brown ghillie brogues - no one carries these hardly), hand-woven tweeds and tartans, hand-knitted kilt-hose (not the factory produced stuff), really nice hand-made dirks, targes and sgian-dubhs,and hand-made Celtic jewelry (not just those cheap pewter clan-badges). We are all so very tired of seeing Wm. Scott Sporrans and Jewelry by Carrick and Art-Pewter-Silver, and those Rodlinoch and Ingles Buchan ties. Ortak silver, Buchan Stoneware and Edinburgh Crystal are nice enough, but everyone has that stuff already. Think unique!
