Question about making jewelry

Q.I'm interested in learning to make piercing jewelry, and wondering if anyone here has any advice as to how to go about doing that. Is an apprenticeship in order? What kind of metalworking skills are needed? Are there any courses you can take to get the basic skills required? Any courses I've seen geared towards making jewelry seem to focus more on decorative necklaces, bracelets, etc., which I'm guessing don't use the same techniques at all

A.having recently (within the last year) learned how all the various pieces of body jewelry are made (from internally threaded straight & circular barbells to the balls for same to septum retainers to flat backs & spikes), i'd tell you with no question that it'd take far more machinery than you'd likely be willing to purchase. if you have that much interest in making jewelry, catch a job at a machine shop & make it for an established, quality company. & if you're mainly interested in order to keep down your own costs, either secure yourself a business license & start ordering wholesale, or make friends with a local shop owner & have him order your jewelry for you at a reduced cost.
