Bracelet Man Jewelry

Q.I have a question regarding a piece of jewelry, a bracelet, that my mother-in-law owns. She told my wife it was made by a man whose name is NOT spelled the way it sounds. She pronounces the name "Hobay", but she knows that is not the correct spelling. It would have been made in the early 1900s. My mother-in-law is from the Detroit area and the artist may have been from the Detroit area also. Does anyone have any leads for me to help me decipher the correct name of this particular artist?

A.If you can get ahold of the bracelet itself, and post a photo, and especially if it is marked with appropriate makers marks etc, and you can get a photo of that which is clear enough to see in the photo, then we'd have something more to start with (the marks can sometimes be just looked up on the U.S. patent office web site, or more in depth in published works, and the style of the jewelry may ring bells for people who see it.) Barring that, you might try getting ahold of a Detroit metro area phone book. Call local auction galleries that deal with jewelry (Dumochelles seems to come to mind as one, back from when I lived there), or you might try one or another of the several stores that sells period and estate jewelry. If the man was a recognized artist, rather than a more commercially oriented jeweler, some of the art galleries, there are several around town, might recognize the name... And local jewelry appraisers, such as Birmingham Gemological services, might recognize the name if asked...
