Wedding attire?

Q.I have a midday (11am) wedding to attend in two Saturdays in Newport Beach, in Southern California and haven't figured out what to wear yet. It will probably be scorching hot and I believe that it will be outdoors. I get hot very quickly and I do not want to wear any type of suit to this event. When I get hot, my face turns beet red! I also look hideous in a dress. I look like a stocky drag queen. Ok, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it's really not a pretty sight! My favorite boy cousin is getting married, and I want it to be a great day. If I'm dressed comfortably and nicely, then it will be a good day. I was thinking about wearing the following: black v-neck, close fit sweater w/ 3/4 sleeves (it's very lightweight material) light blue pencil skirt w/ side slit black strappy high heeled sandals black, medium sized, polished calfskin Ferragamo purse small platinum w/ diamond accessories and smallish stainless steel watch Would this be underdressing? I want to look polished and tailored, not fluffy and flowery. I tried this outfit on and asked my brother what he thought, he said that it wasn't dressy enough. He also said that it looked like I was going to a wedding where I didn't know who the married couple was, whatever that means! He said that since I know the groom very well, I should wear a suit or something as dressy! Does that make sense? Well, my brother is only 19 yrs old and he doesn't know how to dress himself yet, tell me that he's wrong! I pick out and buy 97% of his clothes and all of a sudden he's a fashion critic. But, it is my fault b/c I did ask his opinion, ugh... I'm kinda of stressed, can you tell? This is only the 2nd wedding I've ever been to! Also, if I put my hair up this outfit would be dressier, right? I need your advice!

A.OK, firstly, black is a very bad idea at an outdoor daytime wedding, unless it is a fluffy sundress in a floral pattern with a black background, or a color-block linen sheath dress with black on the bottom and pink on the top. I don't think your proposed outfit is "not dressy" but it does not fit what most people think of for a daytime wedding -- which is more fluffy and flowery. The only more tailored clothing you'll see at such an event is almost always sheath dresses (in silk or linen, in non-neutral colors). You might be able to work with the light blue pencil skirt, but you need a different secondary color -- maybe silver or white. That would work with your platinum & diamond jewelry. Or maybe a darker blue, with gold jewelry and dressier watch. Also, consider something with a jacket that you can remove for the outdoor ceremony and put back on when you go inside for dinner. Try: The sort of pants outfit they sell in the dress department -- fluid lightweight fabric with a tunic or meant-to-be-worn-buttoned-up jacket that matches the pants -- with awesome jewelry and heeled shoes. (Avoid heels that will sink into the grass.) "Dress separates"; i.e., a tailored skirt and silk blouse that are dyed to match -- again with great jewelry and possibly a hat in the same color family. A late '40s/early '50s look with a full skirt and shapely tailored short-sleeved jacket or blouse, in rich fabrics and a pastel or jeweltone color. And a hat. Skirt and little knit or satiny tank-style top, with a long-sleeved sheer chiffon shirt-jacket in a color that matches either or both skirt and tank. But not black.
