Q.Let me first say that this is in no way a flame or troll post. I am a Pagan/Wiccan/Mother of 2 sons and I am looking for a general overview of opinion on this current case in Detroit Michigan involving Freedom of Religion/Speech issues involving the right or ot of Lincoln Park High School's Principal banning Pagan Students from wearing religious jewelry or attire and requiring other non-christians such as Jews and Muslims to ask permission before wearing their symbols while not applying this new rule to Christian students and their attire. I am hoping to write an indepth story for my Pagan Parenting Page and while the Pagan Commuity has been very vocal in it's support of the Student in the case...The Christian Communities have been silent on it....other then a brief comment "supportive" by Pat Robertson I haven't heard any other Christian views on the issue......(BTW Pat supported it in the frame work of student initiated expression....I am supposing that opposing the student or if the case is judged in favor of the school then that would jeprodize cases by setting a precident Against student intiated speech) What are your honest opinions on the issue?
A.I agree with you that any attire which mocks another religion's belief in such an outward manner should not be allowed...as being mocked ostrasizes and is disconcerting to the persons being mocked....besides Marilyn Manson nauseates me...hoping personally that my sons remain Beatles Fans.... But what if the "disruption...or offense" is simply that to some of the Christian students and their parents....Paganism/Wicca etc. and any symbol/teeshirt/theme paper/etc......is something they find disruptive from their own point of view? What if the site of a Pentacle or a Goddess tee is enough to annoy or insult? Then whose right's are to be observed...the right of th Christia student to an inoffensive/undisruptive learning eviroment...or the right of the Pagan student to be able to celebrate her religion through her jewelry or attire as her Christian classmates already enjoy?
