Baby Charm Jewelry

Q.what jewelry do you wear or covet that you wouldn't have chosen yourself but wear for sentimental reasons?

A.I have two. My mother had lots of precious jewelry but most of it sits in a safety deposit box because it doesn't go with my more casual style. The two that mean most to me are: Her Rolex. I don't particularly care for Rolexes but my mother wore hers daily. I just went through 10 weeks without it, while Rolex overhauled it for me and I missed it every second because it was hers and I hated not having it in my posession. The timing mechanisms were seriously off (it lost 2 hours a day when I finally took it in). I needed it fixed but procrastinated for THREE YEARS because the idea of entrusting it to Rolex worried me. Yes, they'd replace it if they lost it but it wouldn't have been HER Rolex. It looks brand-spanking new now and I'm a bit bummed that any minor scuffs or scratches in the gold and steel my mother may have made are gone. Her charm bracelet. My mother's charm bracelet, which she didn't wear beyond my childhood, has a lot of memories and history attached. I remember the sound of it tinkling when she was wearing it out and sometimes I handle it to hear that sound. Also, the charms all have some significance. My mother was from Japan and the first charm is the New York skyline (pre-WTC, since this was the late 50's) with the date of her arrival in the U.S. engraved on it. There are charms for a diploma she earned here because she went to school to learn English, with the date it was awarded, An American flag with the date on which she got her U.S. citizenship, two baby charms with the birth dates of by brother and me, etc. There's a whole timeline there from the 50's to early 70's (after which she didn't wear it or add to it) and I wouldn't know the dates of anything but the birthdays if I didn't have the bracelet.
