Baby Birthstone JewelryQ.After my baby is born, I'd like to give my mother some piece of jewelry with the baby's birthstone in it, as a sort of thank-you gift. She'll be taking time (about 6 weeks, we think) off the road to come help with the baby, housework, and labor, and I really wanted to be able to give her something nice to thank her. I thought it would be sweet to have the baby actually *give* her the gift, but so far about the only way I can think of is to get a necklace, and put it on the baby right before I give him/her to my mom to hold. I was just curious if anybody had any other cute suggestions of a way to do this, or even on why one piece of jewelry might be better over the other (having a real tough time deciding what to get!) A.My MIL is also collecting charms for each of the grandkids, except hers don't have birthstones--they are the small profile charms with the child's name and birthdate engraved on it. She loves it and wears it all the time...now that babies #5 and #6 are coming, she is finding that she is going to have to get a heavier chain! My Mom has no "grandma" jewelry and my sibs and I were talking about getting her something. We definitely want to get something that can be added to, as 2 of us are not finished with our families yet, although my sis is done and who knows about my brother. Baby #9 is due any day now for her, and #10 next month. So I'm having a hard time coming up with an idea--we're talking about 10 birthstones or charms and that can be expensive and heavy! I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone has other ideas.... One non-jewelry idea--my SIL is putting together a "grandma" quilt for MIL. We all went out together to pick out the fabrics, and she's giving each of us sisters plain white blocks on which we are to affix the kids' handprints. Then we are going to get together one weekend in the Spring and piece the quilt together, and then Juli is going to quilt it (we might be able to go help her some with that too). We're hoping to present it to MIL on Mother's Day (which is also her birthday, which is very convenient since this quilt pretty much fills our budgets for both gifts!). There will be "open" squares on which we can put future baby's handprints.
