Q.I'm a new commer to the field of jewelry business and looking for information. I use computers as design and manufacturing tools for gold jewelry. The responses stimulate me to considder taking this hoby further. For this need some basic data, or sources, on the jewelry business. I'm interested in: 1. The make-up of the jewelry business: - What segments (like high end low end) - segment sizes in terms of revenue (how big is this business) - main players and their characteristics 2. The processes used from design to finished product - Particular interest in high volume production methods (what technology) - what problems in existing processes (labor, ? design limitations to molds, etc.) 3. Distribution channels and methods. Basicaly learn about the bisuness. Any little feadback will help! Also, are there any reports on this industry that give business data ? Any suggestions where to start ?
A.I own a twenty year old jewelry manufacturing and wholesale service shop. I'm just starting to explore using cad/cam for design and carving wax. You seem to have stated that you use computer milling in your work, is that right? Which milling machine do you use? Feel free to e-mail me regarding particulars of the tradeshop/manufacturing biz and of course be sure to tell me what you're doin' with cad/cam :) I visited an electronically controlled machine tool show last week and have long lusted after a personal robotic milling set up to use in my biz. We do many custom designs weekly, casting every morning multiple projects. My union craftspersons provide our customers with extremely fine detailed products and I feel robotics plays an important part in our future
