A.I see the FSC mark quite often, but I have read that this is somewhat devalued now, because the checking is not done often enough or by independent sources - think that was in BBC Wildlife? (mind you, I think their reporting can be a bit mixed.) And that mark seems to be only on raw timber and occasionally garden furniture - not, say, dining tables or timberframed sofas. I have a young hazel tree and a young lime - I was thinking of planting them somewhere out of the way with a view to coppicing them eventually for fence posts and so on (maybe even try to make some garden furniture). I've got room for 2-3 coppice stools, I think, and if I fill in between the apple trees and the beech hedge, I think they should go up rather than sideways. I've read that coppicing should done be on a 10 or even 20 year cycle, but surely a hazel will be a big, big tree by that time?! I suppose a sweet chestnut would be the best thing, as the wood is apparently indestructible, but I'm not sure if I've got room for one as well. Anyone know how fast they grow, and if they are OK for coppicing? The only sweet chestnut woodland I know isn't coppiced, just left to do its own thing.
