Is plastic/acrylic/lucite body jewelry safe?
Q.Tthe other day I was browsing through a piercing catalog and I noticed some cool looking acrylic jewelry, and I got to thinking how awesome it might look to stretch my navel to a 6 or maybe 4 gauge and use a clear plastic CBR. Is plastic/acrylic/lucite body jewelry safe? I know that you can only leave a UV ring in for limited periods of time; is it the same with regular plastic? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
A.Why limited time with UV? never heard that. Dental acrylic is definately safe (unless its my retainers that made me crazy....?) My roommates dad (pharmacist) told me it wasnt good to have straws in my ears, something about the low quality. Alcohol causes it to crack, its not as strong as other materials, its lighter. ive never heard of adverse effects of good quality acrylics. i have had dental acrylic in my mouth for a few years now, never had a problem, and it is UV/and glow in the dark! regular lucite/acrylic will break pretty easy though, because it is heated and bent, therefore making it more brittle. but the dental acrylic stuff is super strong and withstands quite a bit of pressure and doesnt break or crack. there is a plastic that is more of a temporary type (so wildcat says) that is flexible , it doesnt break as easily.they are called fluoro rings and are made of polysterol. I've noticed that the acrylic/plastic jewelry doesn't stay put as well as metals. In a high-friction area (with clothes, movement, etc.) such as your navel, it might not be a good idea. I've worn it at home, but not out, lest I be smacked and have to search for my jewelry like a lost contact lens.
