3 Stone Diamond Pendant.Q.Just ordered a Soft/Hard Arkansas 2 inch by 6 inch combination stone. Since I am new to the "knife game" is it OK to use water rather than oil when sharpening knives with this stone? Seems to me it would be less mess. Also, can you sharpen a knife using a "dry" stone????? A.personally don't use any water or oil when I shappen. I find I get a better edge without. I once read that anything you use to lubricate the stone also holds particals of metal that you have removed and causes the abrasivness of the stone you are using to increase. I don't know if this is true or not, but it seems reasonable. Also like you said it does get messy. And to answer your last question you absolutlely can sharpen on a dry stone. Good luck with the sharpening. There are a number of good references on the web you could consult and a couple of good books too. The one I like is He also has a web site, but I don't remember what it is right now.
